72% of female athletes consider themselves to be confident rather than 57% of their non-athlete peers.
In the United States, 61% of girls who have a 4.0 GPA play sports.
Female athletes are 14% more likely to believe they will get their dream job (even if it's non-sports related) than their non-athlete counterparts.
Social Isolation
Girls are often viewed negatively for participating in a sport because athletic activities aren't "feminine". They are subject to bullying from both female and male peers, social ostracization, and poor performance evaluations compared to their male counterparts.
Confidence
According to the Women Sports Foundation, over 75% of grown women felt playing a sport in their younger years helped enhance their self-image.
Expenses
Funding for public school sports is constantly being lowered. This leads to abolishing sports teams, cutting participation, and fewer opportunities for girls. The only other option is to join a private team, which is expensive as families now have to pay for training gear, travel fees, and expensive coaches. According to USA Today, the average private middle school sports team is upwards of $2,500. And that's just for membership! The majority of families simply cannot pay that much.
Health Benefits
Although the majority of girls looking to play sports are healthy already, sports can provide numerous health benefits even as they grow older. For example, girls who play are 20% less likely to contract breast cancer.
Safety Issues
Sporting games are often held after school, but in facilities far away. When parents are unable to drive them, it may be unsafe for girls to travel alone, especially in urban areas where they have to use public transportation.
Body-Image
High school female athletes have a much higher body-image than non female athletes. They are less likely to experience body dysmorphia.
